Zoo for rescued animals

The Five Sisters Zoo in West Calder, Scotland, is one of the most well-known and popular attractions in West Lothian and a unique place that delights animal lovers and families alike. This privately owned zoo is located in a picturesque setting near the town of West Calder and has evolved into a significant center for animal care and conservation since its establishment. Named after the nearby Five Sisters Shale Bings, a prominent industrial landmark, the zoo combines nature experiences with a strong commitment to rescuing and rehabilitating animals from challenging situations.

Family-friendly activities at zoo

The history of the Five Sisters Zoo began in 2005, when Brian and Shirley Curran, who originally ran a garden center, decided to make wild animals accessible to the public and obtained a license to do so. What started as a small attraction within their garden center quickly grew into an independent zoo with over 180 different species from around the world. Particularly noteworthy is the zoo's role as a sanctuary for rescued animals. Since 2012, it has been working with the Belgian rescue center Natuurhulpcentrum to provide a new home for abused or neglected animals. Prominent residents include brown bears, lions, and an Asian black bear, all coming from precarious situations such as circuses or war zones.

Nature experience at Five Sisters Zoo

The zoo's facilities are designed to provide generous and natural habitats for the animals. Visitors can discover a variety of species, including exotic animals like lemurs, lynx, snow leopards, and capybaras, as well as native species like Scottish wildcats. A highlight is the "Lost Kingdom," a covered reptile house that houses an impressive collection of snakes, lizards, and crocodiles, offering an exciting experience even on rainy days. The enclosures are designed to meet the animals' needs, with plenty of space and areas that can be used both indoors and outdoors, giving the animals choices and promoting their well-being.

Educational programs for children zoo

The Five Sisters Zoo places great emphasis on education and interaction. Daily keeper talks and feeding sessions allow visitors to learn more about the animals' life stories and needs. Particularly popular are the "Feed the Lemur" sessions, where visitors can feed the playful ring-tailed lemurs by hand, as well as the opportunity to experience animals like snakes, bearded dragons, or giant snails up close during handling sessions. These activities make the zoo not only entertaining but also educational, raising awareness for conservation.

Animal care and conservation zoo

In addition to the animals, the zoo also offers numerous recreational activities for families. A large playground and an indoor soft play area called "Leaping Lemurs" ensure that children of all ages have fun, while parents can enjoy the surroundings. There are picnic areas and a short woodland walk that provides a welcome change and highlights the natural beauty of the area. A café and mobile food stands offer a range of foods, from snacks to hot meals, inviting visitors to linger.

The zoo has a tumultuous past that underscores its commitment to the animals. In 2013, a devastating fire destroyed the reptile house and adjacent enclosures, resulting in the loss of numerous animals, including snakes, lizards, and meerkats. Thanks to the support of the community and extensive donations, the zoo was rebuilt, with the new facilities being even better suited to the animals' needs. This resilience is also reflected in the ongoing rescue work, such as the admission of Yampil, an Asian black bear rescued in 2024 from a war-torn zoo in Ukraine.

The Five Sisters Zoo is more than just a tourist attraction - it is a place with a heart and a mission. As a member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums, it upholds high standards in animal care and reinvests its earnings in the maintenance of the animals and the expansion of the facility. The passion of the operators and the dedication of the staff are noticeable and make the visit a special experience.

Thanks to my wife for giving me for Xmas a "feed the penguins experience" absolutely brilliant way to spend an afternoon. The experience itself lasted just over half an hour but with access to the zoo both beforehand and after was excellent. The weather was a bit overcast with drizzle but the sun did peak thru so always a bonus. The penguin keepers were full of facts and interesting information regarding their humbolt penguins and the fish feeding frenzy was fun. As frequent visitors to the zoo we were not disappointed and were able to, for the 1st time, see both of the fishing cats and both clouded leopards. Have never been dissatisfied with any visit and cannot find fault with the zoo at all. Yet again well done for providing forever homes for a diverse range of animals

Good value for money, not too big a site for kids to walk around. Some bits are a bit out dated.

Should be reduced pricing in winter. Not many visitors and half the outside animals hiding due to weather

We absolutely love this zoo, but today was something so magical. My son did the half zoo keeper day with zoo keeper Sean. He was fantastic, extremely knowledgeable and patient with all the children. My son has said this is his best memory, thank you! Looks like we are coming back next year for this experience, but will visit before then! Best day ever and we were only spectators ❤️

Really disappointing trip yesterday (Feb 2025) to Five Sisters Zoo. We turned up just after opening and paid £37.90 entry for 2 adults and a 2-year old (free) - to be told after paying the full price that everything inside (apart from the animal enclosures) was closed as it was off-season. We were a bit miffed as surely this should be reflected through seasonal pricing? We entered the zoo and very quickly realised that we were going to see very few animals. I know that going to a zoo in February you risk animals being inside, but we couldn’t even see the inside parts of enclosures due to the windows being so badly steamed up with condensation. We saw a grand total of about 4 outdoor animals during our whole visit and ended up leaving after an hour as our 2 year old was fed up of looking at empty exhibits. Throughout the zoo itself the Christmas decorations had also been left up, giving the whole place a bit of an untidy feel. Everything else (food stalls, children’s play area etc.) was closed. After this we made a visit to the soft play so that our 1.5 hour drive wasn’t a total waste. We weren’t pleased to discover that after paying nearly £40 for entry to the zoo that we then had to pay another almost £7 for the soft play! We ordered lunch here as nowhere else was open for serving food - I ordered a tuna panini, and instead received a tuna toastie which to my horror was served on mouldy bread. Thankfully I was refunded the £6 for my toastie and at this point we took our toddler and left. The toilet facilities in the soft play weren’t the cleanest and left us questioning what the soft play itself would be like! All in all a totally disappointing, expensive day out for us all. Definitely won’t be back.

Loved it. Considering it's the beginning of February and most zoos don't open until the spring, it was a great day out seeing many of the animals. My daughter loves the otters and there were so many of them. The only thing I didn't consider is that the soft play is paid for separately. So if you are considering this, keep it in mind. Also compliments to the very friendly staff there, they helped make the visit a pleasure.

Quite disappointed with my most recent visit. Place had an eerie atmosphere, everything was closed and there was one food van near the lion enclosure serving overpriced junk food, which was made by wee girls that lacked experience of making anything edible. No main animals shows on. The main animals were locked inside by the looks of it. The leopard looked demented in a tiny enclosure. Any staff we interacting with looked miserable and the gift shop was full of cheap temu junk. It can be so much better.

One of the best zoos I’ve ever been to. Genuinely well-cared-for and happy seeming animals. Lots to see. Staff are excellent and answered all our questions. A great day out. Prices are very reasonable.

Really lovely little place. Slightly rough around the edges in places, but a great range of animals and a perfectly acceptable café. Kids loved it. Highly recommended.
